Beyond an Object

Artefact

BA1, 2018

This project is a representation and exploration of two architectural principles: Scale + Module, while working within metal, the primary material.

The artefact takes the form of two identical modules representing a stereotypical house in form while both at different scales.

The form represent the simplicity of modular architecture, metal is an extremely maleable material allowing each module to be made from one seamless piece. By making two standard shapes from the fewest parts the construction time can be reduced. Meanwhile each module can be assembled without the use of specialist equipment.

The base experiments with a technique using offcuts and discarded pieces of acrylic sheet to minimise waste and turn it into a useable product. By shredding and heating the waste pieces they can be pressed into a sheet that can be cut into the desired shape.
